About — zero8

We were an agency before we were zero8.

We ran a digital agency, doing what digital agencies do: interviewing clients, learning their business, designing, showing, listening, building the feedback in, deploying, and then helping the world find the thing. We did it by hand for years — until we realised the process was the product. This is that story.

01 — The practise

How the work actually goes.

It starts with a conversation, and it very rarely starts with a website.

We interview our customer. Not a form, not a questionnaire — a real conversation about the business. What it sells, who buys it, how the money actually moves through it. We keep asking until we understand the business process itself, because you cannot build the front door to something you don't understand.

Then we interview them again, with a narrower question: what exactly do you want us to build? At least in terms of the frontend — the web application, the website, the pages a customer will actually stand in front of. That second conversation is where a vague ambition turns into something with edges.

After that we go away and do a design implementation. We come back and show them. They give us feedback — they always give us feedback, and it is usually the useful kind, the kind you only get from someone who knows their own business better than you ever will. We implement that feedback. We show them again.

And then we go around again. And again.

We repeat that cycle for a while, until they are sort of happy — which is the honest way to describe the moment a project is ready. Then we deploy it. The site goes live, everyone is pleased, and for a short while it feels finished.

It never is. Inevitably they come back and ask the question everyone comes back and asks: well, how do people find our website? So we do the promotion side too — search, campaigns, the blog, the whole business of being visible. And that starts the work over again, because everything we learn about how people arrive and what they do when they get there gets implemented straight back into the site.

Interview, understand, design, show, listen, implement, repeat, deploy, promote, listen again. That is the practise. We ran it by hand, over and over, for years.

02 — The moving parts

What the work is made of.

Three disciplines, turning against each other.

A practise like that one doesn't run on a single skill. It runs on three, and it only works when they're geared together — each one turns the next, and none of them gets to stop and wait.

Engineering

Builds the thing, then builds the thing that builds it.

Every shortcut written to survive the tenth iteration of a project stopped being a shortcut and became part of the engine. That's the part of the work that turned into zero8 itself.

Design

Draws it, shows it, takes the feedback, draws it again.

Real design, not template fill. The language that survived all those rounds of feedback — spacing, type, hierarchy, restraint — is the one zero8 now applies on your behalf.

Marketing

Answers the question that always comes after launch.

How do people find us? Search, campaigns, the blog. This is the part where traffic teaches the site what to change — and hands that straight back to design and engineering.

None of these is a department you get handed off to. They're gears on the same shaft — and every one of them is turning while your site is being built.

03 — What it became

So we turned the practise into zero8.

After enough projects, the pattern stopped being a way of working and started being a specification. We knew the questions we always asked. We knew the order they went in. We knew what a good answer looked like, and what we would do with it. That is a process you can hand to software.

So that is what we did. zero8 runs the same process we used to run by hand. It interviews you about your business the way Emir would. It works out what needs building before it builds anything. It does a design implementation the way Zoran would, shows it to you, takes your feedback, and goes around again — as many times as it takes for you to be more than sort of happy. Then it deploys. Then it helps people find you, and feeds what it learns back into the site.

The agency taught us the practise. zero8 runs it for anyone who needs it, without waiting on a four-person team and an agency calendar.
